All of us would love to vacation in the Bahamas? It is one of the best spots on earth with its pristine beaches and rare flora. However, what exactly is meant by the word “Bahamas” if there is any meaning at all? An attempt to trace a bit of the history of the Bahamas would lead us to Columbus who first sighted these sparsely populated islands in the Atlantic Ocean. He casually uttered the term “bajamar” meaning “low tide” on sighting these islands.
However, after landing on the island he was a bit dismayed as he was met with resistance from the natives, the Lucayan Indians who were later enslaved. Sadly, today there is no trace of this race anywhere on earth.

Over a period of time these islands became a popular hiding place for pirates who lured ships laden with merchandise by cleverly flashing lights that were mistaken for lighthouse signals. The strategy of the pirates was to sink the ships somewhere at Mid-sea, after helping themselves generously to the cargo. Infamous sea pirates like Blackbeard and Calico Jack were known to regularly haunt these shores. However, the threat from these pirates was ...
... short-lived as the Spanish troops destroyed the town of Nassau and let the pirates have a strong dose of their own medicine. The peace did not last for long and piracy raised its ugly head again and the King of England had to appoint Woodes Rogers as governor to restore order. Rogers, a reformed pirate himself knew all the tricks of the trade and was able to bring piracy under control. He had more than 100 of these pirates surrender to his amnesty offer. It was much later that the island became peaceful enough for tourists and vacationers to be attracted to this heaven on earth.

Planning a vacation and reaching the Bahamas is pretty easy as most airlines operate direct flights to Nassau International Airport. With plenty of star hotels dotting the landscape a comfortable stay is assured. There are a whole lot of exciting things you can do on your trip to make it a pleasant and memorable experience. For starters you could explore Castaway Cay which is a 1000 acre island and you can have an exclusive cruise line that will ferry you across. There are pristine beaches that have separate areas reserved for family and areas exclusively for teens. For the naughty and the adventurous, Serenity Bay is a natural choice, though it is strictly for adults only. A typical day would consist of paddling around in the water with a bit of snorkeling to add to the fun. Your kids will be thrilled by Scuttle’s Cove and Monstro Point where you could rent floats, jet-skis and paddle boats. The teens could have a field day playing volleyball, ping pong and tether ball and explore a bit of the marine life. There are trams that will take you to Serenity Bay. Only people over 18 are allowed and it would be worth it to check out the exotic massage cabanas. Special couples’s massages have tales of their own to carry back home. A variety of food and drinks are available round the clock. You could visit the Blue Lagoon Island will simply love the friendly and playful dolphins, the almost humanlike reactions from the creatures will certainly amaze you. You could also take a close look at the sea lions. Have an thrilling adventure all by yourselves at the Exuma Cays which are just an hour’s boat ride away. Get a close up view of the starfish, which are aplenty. Don’t forget to add Freeport in your itinery; West End and East End where you could indulge in biking, hiking and a bit of kayaking, and for people who are up to it diving at Owl’s Hole and Ben’s Cave should be enough to call it a day. A good time for the entire family is guaranteed when you visit the Bahamas.
