When we consume any packaged food, we hardly ever notice the color or give it a thought if that is the natural color or a certain kind of food color has been added to it. We simply take that particular food for granted and don’t give it a thought when taking a bite. But this is a fact that for centuries food colors have been used to make any particular food all the more attractive and sumptuous.
Food coloring is a kind of a substance that can be found in powder or liquid form and is basically added to any particular drink or food to modify its color. Food coloring is often used not only in commercial food production and packages foods but also at home in cooking. Different types of food colours are available and there is a reason on why they are being used so extensively. We generally tend to link a particular food with a specific color and this can have an impact on how we perceive the flavor of that particular food will be. Though most people know that packaged foods and brightly colored foods contain food colors, very few know that even natural foods such as oranges or salmon is sometimes dyed to hide its natural color variation. It is a known fact that foods undergo color variation because of storage and processing and therefore adding color to the food makes it beneficial especially for commercial purposes. Some of the main reasons on why foods are colored include:
The food may encounter offsetting loss in color due to air, light, moisture, storage condition and temperature fluctuations
Masking or hiding the natural food color variations
An effort to enhance the natural colors of a particular food
Ensuring that the vitamins and flavors found in a particular food is protected from getting damaged by being exposed to light
Food color is also synonymous with lending a certain identity to a food
Food color is used to also decorate such as cake icing
