More often than not, karaoke involves slightly tipsy people in their middle age singing songs so far out of tune that it sounds like they have just been afflicted with some serious medical problem. Yet, week in and week out, people pack into their local bars to listen to or take part in karaoke. In some cases, revellers will look to have their performances recorded, whether they are the next musical sensation or unable to hold a note. So what is it that makes this pastime so popular?
