Kundan work is a method that involves gem setting i.e. inserting gold foil between stones and its mount. The word ‘Kundan’ means “Pure Gold” and that is exactly what this technique of setting stones required. The jewellery piece is first shaped by craftsmen and then holes are bored into the piece where precious gems like diamonds, rubies and emeralds are inserted. Stones are set into the jewellery piece with the help of lac and the visible lac is covered with highly refined gold or Kundan and the stone is pushed into the Kundan. To strengthen the setting and give the jewellery piece a neat appearance, more Kundan is applied around edges. Kundan work is often combined with enameling, Meenakari, so that a piece of jewelry has two equally beautiful surfaces, Kundan set gems in the front and enamel on the reverse. This oldest form of jewellery is believed to have originated in the royal courts of Gujarat and Rajasthan.
