The basic use of an electronic cigarette is to be used in place of the tobacco smoking. It is also a smoking cessation device. Electronic cigarettes have three key essential components. The first one is a cartridge. It acts as a mouthpiece besides doubling as a small reservoir that holds the liquid which should be vaporized. The second component of an electronic cigarette is the atomizer. This acts as the heating element that helps to vaporize the liquid. Third, there is a power supply that is basically a battery in the portable models of an electronic cigarette. The power unit comprises of other essential electronic components needed for the operation of E-cigarettes.

Electronic cigarettes have liquids that produce vapor. These are sold as bottled products to be used with cartridges that are refillable and as pre-filled cartridges that are disposable. The liquid in bottled form comes in diverse names such as nicotine solution, e-juice and e-liquid.

Liquid solutions in most of the E-cigarettes have varying contents. However, they mainly comprise of water and flavors in glycerin or propylene glycol base. Moreover, most solutions contain nicotine which is aimed at fulfilling the nicotine replacement purpose.

E-cigarettes contain hundreds of different flavors. Some take after the conventional cigarette types including menthol and regular tobacco whereas some attempt to bear particular cigarette brands such as Camel or Marlboro. There are E-cigarettes that contain diverse food flavors including coffee, vanilla, and cola, among others. The liquid solutions with nicotine are present in varying nicotine concentrations to suit the different needs of those who use E-cigarettes.

In 2010, researchers from Boston University confirmed that use of the E-cigarettes was safer than the actual cigarettes and could help to terminate the smoking habit. They reported that the electronic cigarettes were much safer as compared to the conventional tobacco ones with a level of toxicity same as that in the current nicotine replacements.
