Nowadays there exist almost THREE HUNDRED ‘training schools’ that offer you coach training coarses and a lot of them offer you some sort of a certificate at that.
Before you start, decide if you really need any training.
I have already said much about that in other sources, but I wish to briefly discuss it here also. So before you start looking for a coach training course, ask yourself if you really need this training.
You may be told that to be a professional, coach training and certification is a must. However, it is not one hundred percent true. Most of the leading professionals of today haven’t gone through a certified education and a lot of them haven’t even heard of any training courses.
In reality, your previously gained experience, achievements and knowledge may prove to be enough for you to start a business. Sometimes courses in disciplines like marketing, strategic planning, NLP or hypnosis may become of more use for your professional activity than any of coach training courses. Some life and business coach training courses prove to be better than the others. Some of them are headed by tolerant and gifted trainers who strongly believe in their work. They are devoted to you and want you to reach success. Other coaches however may turn out to have thirst for money, so they are cheating you saying that training and certification is what you need, but in reality they just want you to pay them.
You can never guess which school is good and which is not, so I can give you a piece of advice: Choose the Top Three.
Choose the acclaimed and authorized courses, such as CoachU, Coachville, and The Coaches Training Institute (CTI). All of these have their own frame and focal point. However, they all have a common origin. Such schools as CoachU and CTI claim that experience and expertise are not important, and that coaching should be focused mainly on the enquiry of a client. This idea was also supported by the International Coach Federation.
Although I don’t support this point of view, these two schools have solid training programs. The idea with which I agree more belongs to the Coachville school and it goes: you have to coach what you know.
Anyway, any of these statements would be true for you as a beginner. You may also succeed at The Hudson Institute, or at Georgetown University's coach training program for leadership and executive coaches.
If you decide not to take any courses, try to find an organization which already gained some practical experience and a solid reputation.
No matter which course program you take, try to be decent and diligent. Make some introductory calls, get in touch with some of the graduates (whose names you can ask for in the office), and try what will be best for you personally. Just remember, that that is all your choice!
No matter what the trainers might tell you at the courses, keep in mind that they need you more than you need them. Concentrate on the skills and abilities you need to get your business started. Don’t be confused by the constant options you will be given.
And as a final step, you may come up with your own professional development program by looking for other skills necessary for you to run a successful business.
