If you have ever watched a television program featuring computer gamers, you would most probably have seen people sitting in front of computer screens, with headsets over their ears. When game designers first released games that could be played by more than a single player at the same time, the only mode of communication available to players in those games was through text. Players could only communicate by typing to each other, in much the same way as people do in online chats. After some time, however, software was developed that allowed players to speak to one another through microphones. This eventually led to the development of the Ventrilo server which, when used in conjunction with Minecraft Bukkit, allows for much more exciting and interactive multiplayer Minecraft gameplay.

Ventrilo is actually the name of a piece of VoIP software, or Voice Over Internet Protocol software. VoIP, while a relatively recent phenomenon, is not new to most people. Anyone who has ever used Skype or any similar online communication program that allows for voice to be transmitted back and forth has used a form of VoIP software.

The ...
... development of VoIP software was only made possible when internet speeds became fast enough to support the online transmission of voice. Less than a decade ago, internet speeds were so much slower than they are now that transmitting voice over the internet was not possible except when using the most expensive internet connections that no ordinary consumer would ever subscribe for. The widespread availability of fast internet connections is a relatively recent phenomenon, and so the development of VoIP software targeted at consumers is also a relatively recent phenomenon.

While most companies attempted to take advantage of VoIP software by developing programs allowing people to talk to their friends and family over the internet, some software developers realized the potential market among gamers. Ever since the development of games that allow for multiplayer gameplay over a network, gamers have wished for the ability to speak verbally to the people they play with. Such verbal communication is almost essential in fast-paced games where a high degree of cooperation is required in order to achieve the game’s objective or to fully unlock the potential of the game.

Ventrilo servers were developed to meet such needs among those who played games such as Minecraft. Minecraft features extremely large worlds that can, theoretically, be infinite in size. Such games are specifically designed to support large numbers of players, who require a means to communicate. Players playing on Ventrilo servers are able to communicate with each other verbally, thus making gameplay that much more interactive and making full use of the potential of multiplayer games.

Ventrilo servers can be purchased from any number of hosting companies, which basically specialize in running computers on which servers are installed. Players can then purchase the right to use these servers for a certain period of time. Before you purchase a Ventrilo server from one of these companies, you should first ensure that it provides you with a comprehensive set of administration tools, through software such as Minecraft Bukkit. Such software will make the job of administering your server much easier and more convenient for you.
