With many multiplayer online games, such as Minecraft, players benefit greatly from being able to talk to each other using voice communication. With a Ventrilo server, players are able to do just that. Ventrilo is the name of a type of software that allows for voice communication over the internet between large groups of people. Another tool that also greatly benefits anyone who chooses to run a server for the multiplayer online game Minecraft is Minecraft Bukkit, which is essentially a server administration program that gives the server administrator control over various facets of the game.

When using Ventrilo, each player must have the Ventrilo client software. Using this software, each player is able to connect to the server, which will then process any voice communication coming from one player and distribute it to all the other players connected to that server. While the Ventrilo software client is free to download, the server must be purchased and access to the server is controlled by means of a password.

What this means is that, if you and your friends would like to play Minecraft while using Ventrilo, then ...
... you will have to purchase one of the Ventrilo servers available at one of the myriad online hosting companies. Once you have purchase the server, you can then set a password to control access to the server, and allow your friends to connect to the server by giving them the password. This prevents other people from gaining access to your server and crashing your game.

Ventrilo offers a channel feature that allows for multiple channels to be created. This means that if, for example, the players connected to the same server are not all together, a channel can be created to cater to each separate group of players. For instance, the group of players exploring the north could have their own channel while the group of players exploring the south could have their own channel.

An overlay feature also shows each player all of the other players who are connected to their channel, and displays when a player is actively talking. This feature is known as an overlay because it is overlaid on top of the game, ensuring that you always know who you are talking and who is talking at any point in time.

The server administrator is also able to ban certain people from using the server based on their IP address. The IP address is an identification number unique to each computer. If you no longer wish to allow a particular person access to the server, and do not wish to change the password because it would cause inconvenience for the other players, then you can simply choose to ban the offending player, preventing him from ever joining the server in the future until such time as you choose to lift the ban.

With the advantages outlined above and many more, a Ventrilo server could really be of much benefit to you when you and your friends play Minecraft. Moreover, when Ventrilo servers are used in conjunction with Minecraft Bukkit, administrators are able to create a dynamic and immersive gaming experience based on their own ideas of how the game should be played.
