There has been much press about Brazilian Blowdry treatments: Are they safe and do they actually work?

The Brazilian Blowdry (sometimes known as a Brazilian Keratin treatment) is a hair procedure that straightens your locks for up to three months. Your tresses are also meant to have that “smooth and sleek” look instead of the frizzy mess with which so many girls have to contend.

There has been some worry about the chemicals in the keratin blowdry treatment being punishing to hair and, indeed, the rest of the body. Some people have reported feeling tight-chested and dizzy after having the treatment done.

Investigations into blowdry treatments have found that this is caused by the ingredient formaldehyde, which is used as part of the straightening process. The more formaldehyde, the longer the hair remains straight. It is now common practise that no Brazilian blowdry keratin treatment should be used that contains more than 0.2% formaldehyde; any less and the treatment is safe. If you have any concerns at all, speak to your hairdresser before committing to the keratin blowdry and ask to check the ingredients. This should apply even at reputable salons.
