Indian - Shipping Ministry To Issue Notifications On Ships Over 25 Years Old

In a move to curb marine accidents, the Union Shipping Ministry plans to issue notifications on ships which are over 25 years old, its Minister G K Vasan said here today.

"The age of the ship plays a major role in marine accidents.. the Government proposes to issue a notification imposing restrictions on ships, which are over 25 years in order to prevent marine accidents," he said at a conference organised by Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers here.

The Minister also said that the country was trying to attract foreign companies in the area of dredging as there was huge requirement.

"The country faces a total capital dredging requirement of almost 298.28 million cubic meter in all the major ports by March 2012. Hence, India is trying to attract overseas companies in area of dredging," he said.

Besides, he said the Ministry was closely monitoring piracy-related incidents through DG Shipping in coordination with Navy, Ministry of Defence and Ministry of External Affairs.

Earlier, a delegation from Belgium led by Minister-President of the Flemish Government, Kris Peeters called on Vasan to take stock of various cooperative arrangements between Flemish Government and India.
