Talented artists sometimes find that graphic design programs offer the right degree of creativity and predictability to fit their lives. Though most graphic designers work independently with a single client to make digital art for a specific project, others work for design firms.

Though this career path seems like a relatively new one, primarily related to computer technology, it has actually been a valid form of employment for decades. The true essence of what a designer does revolves around creating visible answers to real-world problems. Those in the design field develop graphics that go beyond the ordinary, to speak to the viewer and often encourage them to take part in a specific call to action. At times, the images are more valuable to the campaign than the written language paired with it.

Modern day graphic artists do everything from creating customized logos for businesses to forming industry-specific images for websites. Although this is a competitive field in many respects, it is also a continuously growing one, where opportunity for fresh talent abounds.

The advantages to taking on ...
... a job in this field are many. Many in this field are self-employed as independent contractors and even those who work for agencies are often given a chance to complete most, if not all, of their work from the comfort of their own home office. This makes it a perfect job for parents, who wish to spend as much time as possible with their families. Though deadlines and difficult clients can add on a fair amount of stress, the overall levels of job-related stress are pretty low.

As for education, a bachelor's degree is generally recommended and is what most employers will look for on a resume. Finding institutions that offer majors in this field is not difficult, as most major universities today have a thoroughly constructed design program in place. There are also other methods of building up experience, typically in anticipation of eventually receiving a higher degree, such as those offered through trade schools.

Anyone who has artistic ability but wants to maintain a relatively stable form of employment should consider participating in one of the many open graphic design programs as a possible option, as it seems to offer the best of both worlds. Those first starting out in this industry will probably find themselves making moderate earnings, but over time income generally grows. Opportunities for job seekers may actually increase in the coming years as the world becomes more dependent on image-driven media and marketing.
