One you've gained some eve online isk and skills you can buy the Osprey. At this point it's best to train Electronics and Engineering. With the correct ship and the set of skills you'll be able to fit three tier 2 miners. With the use of this ship you can fly to lower security systems and defend yourself against the pirates. Than a good option is to train Astrogeology to level 4. After this skill you'll be able to get a mining barge which is the best path for you after the Osprey.

For refining you'll have to know several basic things. The first thing to do is to train your Refining skill to 4 or even to 5 so you'll be able to refine with more efficiency.

After you'll train Refining to 5 you'll have the chance to have Refinery Efficieny. Also it's important to have a good standing towards the corporation that owns the station (6.7 is the best standing) because it will lower the tax on refining.

Also it's important to understand the basics of mining cycles. This means that after a particular work time of your mining laser you'll receive a particular amount of ore. Different mining equipment has different mining ...
... cycles. Mining lasers have a mining cycle of sixty seconds. Lasers have a mining cycle of 180 seconds.

At later stages of your mining career you'll have to choose a ship for mining. You can choose between a battleship and a mining barge. At first you'll have to understand your goals and preferences. If you buy a battleship then you'll have the ability to use it for PvP as well and it will perform in mining as good as medium mining barges. But if you want a ship that will be the best for mining then it's better to have a mining barge.

If you want a battleship then the best choice will be the Revelation, Rokh and the Apocalypse. These ships have enough turret slots to fit maximum mining lasers. If you're looking for a mining barge it's better to use a Retriever or a Covetor. Also consider buying an Exhumer. It's easier tha just to buy isk.

A good idea is to use drones. Mining drones have the ability to increase mining efficiency, but the combat drones will help you stay alive in difficult situations, which is very important for low-sec or null-sec systems and won't have to buy isk if you lose a ship.

Overall the mining profession is very interesting and for a new player it can seem quite complex. But if you spend a decent amount of time on studying all the aspects of this profession and make efforts to make your mining more efficient you'll have the ability to excel and gain a lot of eve online isk.
