Leading by example

By being an active participant, you are showing your team that you are as much focused and interested about the project as the team members are. In a team with people from different background and experience, it is quite obvious that not everybody will be able to give the same kind of performance. Sometimes even the best worker will have tough times in meeting the targets. In that case, there is no point in shooting him or her out with harsh words. By doing so, you are only injuring the confidence level and mood of the employee. Instead, take the person alone and take him through a good 10 or 15-minute counseling session which will do a lot of good for his confidence level. It will also make him work on his weakness and bounce back with a strong performance next time.

Communicate effectively
A great leader should always be a good communicator and a good communicator should be a good listener. If there is no proper communication between the team leader and the team members, then there is a strong possibility that some of the issues will be left unaddressed and unnoticed. Be clear and straightforward in your points. Don’t give a dull speech at the team meeting and spoil the mood of the employees. Most team members make this mistake of giving lectures for an hour for what should have consumed only 15 minutes if the points were straight forward with simple examples. Always give your team members the freedom to come up to you and express the issue they are facing at work. And if there is anything you could do about it, take up the responsibility and resolve it at the earliest.
