Growing ornamental plants for a hobby is a very enjoyable and challenging task. Anyone can grow ornamental plants, if they have enough time and space. If you take plant growing as a hobby, it will give peace in your mind, a calmness feeling and a healthy body. The only thing is we should have to take care of plants, just like we take care of our children. If we love plants, they will feel it and return it. Did anyone tried to talk to plants? They are good listeners. They can understand your feelings and give your burning heart a soothing effect.
Let’s discuss about some of the ornamental plants that can make our garden more attractive. One of the commonly available ornamental plants is bougainvillea. This climber is a native of South America. The plant is available in so many variegated colors. We can grow bougainvilleas in almost all climates, except in Antarctica. As this plant can be grown in pots, fences and even used for bonsai. As they are good climbers they can be used for covering pagodas and carports. We can prune some bougainvillea varieties into certain shapes. These plants can also be pruned into shrubs ...
... and hedges. Though most of the bougainvillea varieties are pest free, some plants growing in humid regions can have leaf spot and fungus problems.
Another favorite plant of gardeners is Dahlia. This plant will grow in almost all locations and soil. This bushy and herbaceous tuberous plant is a member of Asteraceae family. Dahlia is a native of Mexico, Central America, and Colombia. Some of the varieties of dahlia that are available include pompon dahlia, medium cactus dahlia, medium decorative dahlia and large decorative dahlia. As dahlia comes under the bulb category, its propagation can be done by late cuttings or tubers. Majority of dahlia plants will die after flowering. When the plant dies after flowering, carefully dig the plant to take the tubers out. This tuber can be used to grow a new plant.
If you want to grow a plant that can retain its flower for a long time, then go for gerbera. As the flowers of gerbera won’t wilt within two to three days, people are using this flower to make bouquets and garlands. Some 40 species of gerbera are known to the world. These plants are usually grown in greenhouses and are used for cut flowers. We can see gerbera flowers in white, red, cream, orange, pink, purple and yellow colors. Gerbera thrives well in well drained soil, but insufficient sunlight will make the flower not to bloom well. Red spider mites are the main enemies of gerbera. Other pests that affect gerbera include aphids and whiteflies. Fugues and stem rot are the other common problems with gerbera. The best way to prevent spread of fungus infection is by removing old leaves. One of the easiest methods to propagate gerbera is division of the crown. While dividing the plant, each sucker should be given some roots.
Hydrangea is another beautiful and rewarding group of flowering plants. This plant can adapt to a wide range of climates. Oak-leaved hydrangeas, Hydrangea quercifolia are the commonly available Hydrangea species. Except white, the other varieties of hydrangea have got the ability to change its colors, with the change of acidity of the soil. These plants grow best in partial shade to full sun. Winter and too much shade can hinder the growth of the plant. You can propagate this plant from softwood cuttings in June. With the advancement of technology you can search details of the plant on the Internet and place an order for it by calling your nearby flower nursery with service from providers like Cox Deals.
