Your first dance as a married couple is extremely important. It's one of the first opportunities for your guests to see you and your mate as a married couple. And, this first dance opens the dance floor for business and can set the tone for your entire reception. Whether you're hiring a band or using prerecorded music, these tips can help you choose a song to fit your wedding and inspire your guests to get moving.

Traditionally, the first dance is a slow dance. This may allow you to talk to your spouse at length for the very first time since the wedding took place, and allow you to catch your breath before greeting your guests. A slow dance also allows you to show off your gorgeous wedding dress from all angles. The song you choose will be dependent on the music you and your spouse love to listen to, and it should express your individual style and message. Common choices include:

* "At Last" by Etta James

* "I Can't Help Falling in Love with You" by Elvis Presley

* "Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong

* "Unforgettable" by Nat King Cole

* "It Had to be You" by Harry ...
... Connick, Jr.

* "Just the Way You Are" by Billy Joel

Your choices aren't limited by this list, however. Almost any song can be a first dance song, as long as the lyrics aren't suggestive and don't refer to anything unpleasant. Look for slow songs that have love and commitment at the center. Think of the song as an expression of how you and your mate feel about one another.

Consider making a play list and load it onto your MP3 player, as well as your guy's MP3 player. Let the songs play in the background while you run your errands or exercise. In a week, cast your vote for your favorite song, and let your guy do the same. Make sure you're ready to work out a compromise, if you can't choose the same song. It's a valuable skill you'll need throughout your married life, and you'll get a jumpstart through this process.
