Prior to you purchasing a hearing aid, put the following questions to your audiologist:

Which options would be of most value to me?

What constitutes the total price of the hearing aid? Do the benefits of the latest technical advancements outweigh the larger prices?

What is the duration of the warranty? Is it conceivable to extend it? Does the guarantee include upcoming maintenance and repairs?

What about a trial period to test the hearing aids? (Most makers provide a 30 - 60-day trial period during which hearing aids can be returned for a refund.) What fees will not be refunded if the hearing aid is given back after the trial period?

Will the audiologist do any modifications and provide servicing and minor repairs? Will loaner hearing aids be provided while repairs are done?

What training does the audiologist give?

New hearing aids

Although they function differently from hearing aids worn externally, implantable hearing aid design helps to increase the transmitting of audio vibrations moving into the inner ear. Middle ear implants (MEI) are small devices attached to bones ...
... in the middle ear. Instead of amplifying the sound moving to the eardrum, the MEI moves the bones directly. Both of these techniques deliver the same outcome of strengthening audio vibrations going into the inner ear in order for them to be perceived by individuals suffering from sensorineural hearing loss.

BAHA (Bone anchored) hearing aids are tiny devices that are attached to the bones located behind the ear. Sound vibrations are transmitted directly into the inner ear thru the skull, bypassing the middle ear. Typically BAHAs are utilized by individuals with middle ear disorders or deafness in one ear. Because a surgical process is involved to implant these devices, several hearing specialists believe the benefits might not be adequate to outbalance the risks.

New research on hearing aids

New ways are being considered by researchers to employ new signal processing techniques to the design of hearing aids. Signal processing comprises the process used to change raw sound waves to magnified sounds best matched to the remaining sense of hearing of an individual using a hearing aid. Research funded by NIDCD is also studying how to induce hearing aids to enhance speech signals to improve understanding.

In addition, research is checking into the use of computer aided technology in planning and constructing more efficient hearing aids. Investigators continue to look for ways to improve sound transferring to cut back on feedback, noise interference and the blockage effect. Additional fields of study centre on the most advantageous methods to select and fit hearing aids to children and other groups whose hearing ability is hard to analyse.

Other promising research facilities concentrate on applying lessons learned from animal models to aim for better microphones to be utilized in hearing aids. NIDCD supported scientists are studying the tiny Ormia ochracea fly since they have an ear construction that lets the fly determine the origination of sounds easily. This insect has an ear structure that's being applied by scientists as a model for designing small directional microphones to be used in hearing aids. The microphones amplify the sound starting from a particular focal point (usually the direction a person is facing), minus the sounds that occur from another direction. Directional microphones maintain great promise for making it easier to hear a single conversation, even while surrounded by some other voices and noises.
