Moving or relocating can be one of the most nerve-racking tasks especially if it is not planned properly. As soon as you have chosen to move or relocate to a different location, the first thing that you need to do is to prepare a checklist of the things you need to do prior to the moving process. Just like how planning is essential for each and every step we take in life, compiling a check list is also very important to avoid the hassles at the last moment. It is always good to start planning one month ahead of the moving process. The one month-advance plan can be devised such as the one given below.

One month before moving

One month to go! So it is time to get rid of all the old dust-covered items from the house, isn’t it? What is the purpose of having things that are not even in a useable state? If you are able to sell the things even for a substantial price, it would do some good by saving a lot of place. Plus the additional money got by selling the unusable items comes as a bonus. If you are moving to a far-away place that might take a couple or more days to reach, then you may want to have a storage place ...
... for your things as well as on-the-way accommodation for you and your family. In such cases, it is good to get in touch with a company that offers service on the same lines. They generally have tie-ups with real estate agents and can easily find a temporary accommodation for you. Pack your things with appropriate boxes. These days, there are providers who offer packaging services at cheaper rates plus free door delivery to your new place.

Two weeks to move

Amidst all the tension, though we don’t forget to include all the major items in the moving checklist, there is a possibility that we may forget to think of or pay attention to the trivial yet essential things. Yes, two weeks prior to the move, avoid provisions in bulk from the supermarket. Buy only for the next 3-4 days until the moving day nears by a day or two. Contact your home insurance agent and check whether both your present and new homes are covered with insurance for the required period of time. By the way, since there are only a couple of weeks left for moving, you can start packing your clothes, and other not-for-emergency-purpose items. And ensure that as and when you pack, the boxes are labeled properly.

One week to go

As you keep arranging and packing the things, it is more likely that you get a lot of wastes or non-essential items. So, just keep doing the throwing exercise and get rid of the unusable items from your household. With just one more week to go for the move, you want to make sure that you don’t miss any of the important bills or documents that come to your mailbox. So just drop a piece of paper stating that you are moving and also mentioning the new or temporary redirection for the mail to get diverted while you are away. And, think of accommodation for your pets. If you have a relative in the new place it wouldn’t harm if you leave your pet 3-4 days before moving.

The day before moving

Disconnect all the electrical and gas connections in your house. Remove all the pluggable items and pack them into a separate box. The night before moving, switch off your refrigerator and put all the vegetables and fruits in a clean cover. And if required, see to that there is parking space for the removal truck to move freely.

On the moving day

Carry all the keys, valuables, and documents safely with you while moving. Once all the things are put in the truck, ensure that there is nothing left behind in any of the rooms or the shelves of the house. Have an essential pack with you; this may include food, glassware, plastic bottles, small-sized vessels, and extra clothes. Also carry a flask of tea or coffee while you are ready to travel to your new house.
