Pioneer Urgent Care: Understanding Sprains Treatment

It's that time of year again. The chance for snow is high, heating bills are up and friends are asking each other advice for sprains treatment. It is quite common for people to fall and suffer injuries during the winter months due to the amount of ice and snow that is so common. A little preparation, such as adding salt to walkways and making sure you have shoes that give you good traction, can help stave off some injuries. But just in case you do have a fall that leaves you black and blue, here is some advice for treating that sprain.
Just What is a Sprain?
A sprain refers to a muscle or tendon that has been injured due to a fall or some other event. Since the tendon is attached to the muscle a sprain can refer to a problem with either organ. Most of the time a sprain occurs because the body part, such as the foot, was stretched beyond its normal range of motion.
Classifying a Sprain
In order to get proper sprains treatment the injury is classified into one of three types
The first type is a mild stretching of ...
... the affected ligament
The second type is a stretching that results in a slight tear of the ligament
The third type is more severe tearing of a ligament. This type can cause pain, bruising and lack of motion.
Common Symptoms
The symptoms will vary based on the severity of the sprain. Many times the ankle will swell and show some discoloration. It can be painful if touched or if the person attempts serious movement such as running or climbing stairs. In many cases walking will be a challenge. The person may even feel as if they will fall if the ligaments have been torn.
Diagnosing
In the event of a sprain it is always best to allow a qualified doctor to examine the injury. A doctor can look at the foot and ankle joint and investigate the seriousness of the problem. The doctor may choose to order x-rays of the affected area for further information. An x-ray can reveal a fracture of the bone or any dislocation. In some instances, other testing may be requested such as a CT test or an MRI test to look at the soft tissue surrounding the ankle joint. All of these tests will be based on the doctor’s judgement.
Determining Sprains Treatment
After determining the type of sprain the doctor will look at a few other items in order to prescribe proper sprains treatment. The patient's medical history, the manner in which the injury occurred as well as the presence of any instability or looseness in the joint will be used to decide what is best to promote healing.
An ankle sprain can be quite painful and cause some problems for the patient. If you think you may have suffered a sprain it is best to let a doctor look at the injury and prescribe proper treatment. As the old saying goes, “it is always better to be safe than sorry.”
