St. Augustine is the considered to be the oldest city in USA. It was originally founded in 1565. There is so much things to do in this historic city. However it is very affordable to visit but nothing is sweeter than getting something for free. Some of the best free things to do in St. Augustine are:
1. St. Augustine Beach: this is a very beautiful beach. Just over the Bridge of Lions you will find Anastasia Island and the beaches. Anastasia State Park is beautiful as well but there is a nominal entrance fee.
2. Fort Matanzas National Monument: it is located at the southern tip of Anastasia Island. It is about 15 minute drive from downtown. It was built in 1740 to guard the southern entrance to the Matanzas River. This river was a "back door" entrance to St. Augustine. This is very interesting for history buffs.
3. Vilano beach fishing Pier- this is very relaxing pier or fishing destination. Just over the Vilano Beach causeway is the small town of Vilano Beach. 6. San Sebastian Winery Tour: The San Sebastian Winery offers daily tours of their facility with complimentary wine tasting. They have wide range of homemade and international wine.
7. Mission of Nombre de Dios: it is located in just north of old town. St. Augustine is home to the oldest Catholic Parish in the United States. It is a wonderful place to have a picnic and just unwind. The Mission of Nombre de Dios is over 208 feet tall and should not be missed.
8. Memorial Presbyterian Church: this beautiful church was built by Henry Flagler in memory of his daughter. You can visit the church during the day. If you want to donate you can but it’s not mandatory.
9. Flagler College: this building was built by Henry Flagler as the Ponce De Leon Hotel for wealthy visitors to St. Augustine on his railroad. Latter grounds and buildings became home to Flagler College. There is a tour of the College but you are welcome to visit the lobby of the main building and meander through the grounds at no charge. The ceilings are guilded in gold and adorned with beautiful murals. This is an active college before you visit must ask for permission.
