The people were willing to pay the higher cost for the convenience of having the item delivered right to their door. The peddler would also hire people to take the merchandise to other locations and sell it. He sold the merchandise to the recruited peddler at the price he paid for it plus his mark up. The newly recruited peddler would go sell the items but he would once again mark up the price so that he made a profit. This type of selling still goes on today by using MLM software and most of the places that you shop have a variation of this strategy that they use.
