Introduction To Some History On Kundalini Yoga And Yogi Bhajan
Hindu Yoga teaches that once you have awakened your Kundalini, the sleeping energy at the base of the spine, you will start experiencing the divine within. The Kundalini can be awakened through yoga postures and breathing techniques. For thousands of years, these techniques were only made available by yoga masters to their initiates. That all changed in 1969 when Yogi Bhajan made the techniques of Kundalini Yoga available to everyone for the first time.
Yogi Bhajan Goes West
Yogi Bhajan was born Harbhajan Singh Puri in Punjab, India in 1929. He first learned the foundations of Sikh dharma from his grandfather. Starting at age 8, he studied Kundalini Yoga with Sant Hazara Singh. At age 16, he was declared a Kundalini Yoga master by Singh. In 1947, he went to Camp College in New Delhi to earn a Master’s degree in economics. Bhajan served in India’s Revenue Department, then as customs inspector for many years before he migrated to Canada to 1968.
A visit to a friend in Los Angeles in late 1968 would become the starting point for the spread of teachings of Kundalini Yoga in the United States. After sharing ...
... philosophy of Kundalini Yoga to the long-haired hippies of California, Bhajan understood just what his calling was, and that was to let everyone experience and benefit from the practice of Kundalini Yoga. He died in 2004 at the age of 75, but his teachings remained available through Yogi Bhajan DVD, books, and other media.
The Right to Be Healthy, Happy, Holy
In 1969, Yogi Bhajan formed the 3HO, which stands for Healthy, Happy, Holy Organization, with the intent of furthering the reach of his teachings. The foundation offered classes on yoga postures, vegetarian nutrition, and meditation. These teachings that interested students for years can now be learned right in their home through Yogi Bhajan DVD.
In 1971, shortly after completing his teacher training certificate, he established the Kundalini Research Institute, a school for training Kundalini Yoga teachers.
Awakening the Kundalini Energy
Kundalini is often depicted as a sleeping serpent wrapped around the base of the spine. Kundalini Yoga combines breathing techniques, stretching, meditation, postures, movements, and relaxation to free this life force and allow it to flow from lower spine to the upper parts of the body through the Chakras (energy centers of the body). Once this life force is awakened, one will feel greater and look better, more relaxed, and more in touch with their inner self.
