If you look out onto your back garden what do you see? Do you see a space you will enjoy using once the weather turns round in favour of the sun again? Or do you see a space filled with stuff to move and weeds to pull up?

If your back garden is an embarrassment rather than an oasis, don’t worry. There are many things you can do to change things for the better, and they all start with having a good plan.

Planning your garden can be a really exciting activity. All you have to do to begin with is to plan out the perimeter – to scale – on a sheet of paper. If you have anything that is going to stay in place, such as flower beds or perhaps a pond for example, make sure you mark them out to scale on your plan. This will enable you to work around them when you are planning your new designs. Once your plan reaches this stage you should make some photocopies of it. You can then try different designs so you can see which ones will look the best in the end.

Next, spend some time thinking about what to do with your space. Many people opt to have decking installed next to their back door, so ...
... they have an entertaining space to use for all kinds of purposes. plastic decking is good for this because it won’t need to be treated or replaced at any point. Composite decking works out cheaper in the end because of its low to no maintenance finish. This might be worth bearing in mind if you are the type of person who likes to enjoy your garden rather than toil away in it!

You may also want to think about other items such as barbecues and tables and chairs. Make sure you have the room for the items you are thinking of including. This will help you to figure out how big the area of plastic decking should be as well, so you can start to factor in the costs of your project.

The good thing about designing your garden like this is that you can work on separate areas at a time. For instance you don’t have to wait until you can afford to do the whole garden in one hit. Instead you can divide the garden up into sections and do one bit at a time. Perhaps you could install the composite decking first, and then move on to tackle the flower beds. This would provide you with an entertaining space to use while you get on with the remainder of the garden. It might be a good way to make the garden more useful while you plan out the rest of your design.
