Amateur growers like the smell and taste of homegrown produce, from fresh tomatoes to flavorful peaches and pears. All plants, from fruit plants to vegetable plants, will need some type of insecticide to prevent outdoor insects like caterpillars and ladybugs from gnawing on the leaves. It may seem that plants require a lot of upkeep to keep the leaves green and free of bite marks, but fruit trees are just as susceptible to insects chewing away at the leaves, and the branches can even catch diseases that can kill the tree itself. A grower will also have to learn what times of the year to trim a tree and how to trim it to keep it healthy and growing at a steady pace.

Pruning

Pruning removes branches and shoots that can ruin a tree’s growing structure; however, pruning a tree is not as simple as chopping off a few branches and expecting the tree to magically sustain itself. Two forms of pruning exist: dormant and summer pruning; each serves a distinct purpose and should be performed only during particular times of the year (e.g. dormant pruning is to be performed only during the winter to stabilize growth). You ...
... must maintain a set pruning cycle for a tree to make certain that its branches and fruit grow healthily and that no blockage of light to its trunk crops up during the winter and fall months. The kind and age of a tree will determine when the perfect time for pruning is; for example, peach trees typically require late pruning because of the late blossoming of fruit. For example, younger trees should be pruned later during the winter to prevent injury, while older trees may be pruned earlier in the winter before fall hits.

Summer pruning is as crucial as winter pruning, because during this time of year, the hacking off of some branches will prevent the tree from growing out the control. When performing summer pruning, a person should start to remove the shoots as soon as the buds start to grow, and usually cutting should be performed on the top growth of a tree or to eliminate any unwanted shoots.

Training

In a perfect environment, a tree will grow with healthy leaves and shoots in a symmetrical structure, and be upright with a strong trunk and green leaves. Trees typically grow wild and like to twist and turn in their own way, making for several unwanted growing structures for farmers. In order to stop the tree from curving and twisting, people will place training wire and sticks to push the branches either away from each other or together to achieve the best possible growing structure for a tree. Say you want to grow a set of pear trees in your backyard; you may need some training tools to ensure the branches do not hit each other and grow properly.
