According to Vaishnava Theology, there lived a powerful king of demons called Hiranyakashipu. Through his long penance, he won the heart of Lord Brahma and was blessed. He had been granted with a blessing which made it almost ...
... impossible for him to be killed. He had been granted with a blessing that he will not be killed during day or night, neither inside the home nor outside, not by a man or by an animal, neither on earth nor on sky. Hiranyakshyap started to consider himself a God and demanded everybody to worship him. Hiranyakashipu had a son. His name was Prahlada. Prahlada was a worshipper of Lord Vishnu. His father, Hiranyakashipu had warned him several times not to worship Lord Vishnu but he never obeyed him. So, Hiranyakashipu finally decided to kill his son, Prahlada. Hiranyakashipu's attempt to kill Prahlada failed. To get rid of his son, Hiranyakshyapu asked his sister, Holika to enter the fire with Prahlad on her lap, as she had a blessing which would prevent her from burning. When the heap of wood started burning, Prahlada came out unharmed and Holika was burnt to ashes. The burning of Holika is celebrated as Holi.

In memory of Lord Krishna and Radha's eternal love, Holi is celebrated for sixteen days in Vrindavan and Mathura. This celebration concludes on Rangpanchami. It happened once that Lord Krishna complained to his mother about the contrast between his dark skin complexion and Radha's fair skin complexion. On doing so repeatedly, Krishna's mother decided to apply color to Radha's face. When it was done, it was liked by Krishna and all his friends. Since then, Lord Krishna, along with his friends, used to smear colors on the gopis and Radha. As this incident took place during spring season, Holi is celebrated during spring, the season of love.
