In my experience, the hypothesis of Krashen's input was extremely helpful. Yet it seems that few researchers agree with the hypothesis in its entirety. This is because Krashen does not just claim that comprehensible input is the most important factor in second language acquisition. He says he is the only factor!
First, comprehensible input is not enough. Merrill Swain examined the ability fran? Ease of children who had been in an immersion school for seven years. These children, who were of English language houses, and all of their primary education in French are not well. Yet after seven years of receipt of truly massive comprehensible input in French, they have still not controlled the French language as comfortable as native speaking children did. Why? Probably there were a number of problems, but more obvious is that students have not had much opportunity to speak the language. They mainly listened to the teacher. When they spoke to each other informally, they used English. When they spoke to the teacher, they used the French. But then, class time is devoted to how all students, one speaking to the teacher, and the children they have never heard from thierclassmates, the non-native speakers like them, and that only happened when their classmates were addressing the teacher. You certainly can not say that children were using the French in a rich variety of life situations, or they use the French Boards for a wide variety of communication purposes. It seems that since they did not speak French very well, their ability to speak does not develop as well as we had hoped. Even their ability to understand French seems to have suffered because they did not talk much. This does not mean they have not learned the French quite fluently. But Swain conjectures that they could have done better if they had been plenty to talk French in addition to all their years of listening to the input comprehensible. And when you learn French, you can use Rosetta Stone French. You can accumulate vocabulary and learn how to talk too.
