The acclaimed 458 Spider is the 29th Ferrari in the Company history to wear the celebrated Spider badge, one that means a slightly more hedonistic spirit and it promises to saturate the senses even more thoroughly than the already irresistibly dynamic coupe’.
Ferrari’s progress with automated transmissions has been exponential since the system first appeared in nascent form on a Mondial in the early ‘90s, more fully on 1997’s F355. One struggles to see how the system could be any sharper or more interactive than it is on the current 458 Italia, or more authentically racy than on the fabulous 430 Scuderia, but another quantum leap forward is in prospect.
The 458 Spider is the latest Ferrari unveiled as at today, a naturally exciting vehicle and the world’s first mid-engine car to feature a retractable hard-top roof, a remarkable innovation if you think about the packaging challenges involved. The 458 Spider nevertheless still hits 100km/h in 3.4 seconds and has a maximum speed of 320 km/h, all while using less fuel (11.8 l/100km) and emitting impressively little CO2 (275g / km). Ferrari now has an emission ...
... level almost 60 per cent lower than the one dictated by European regulations for the sector and it has achieved an exemplary level of energy independence. Furthermore, maximum efficiency is conquered in its engines’ combustion, reducing CO2 emissions by 30 per cent and undertaking projects that focus on the future, such as the 599 hybrid and KERS.
The 458 Spider is a very reactive car, with fantastic handling: it is a little bit softer but it kept all the characteristics of a Ferrari including the engine noise, handling, performance and driving experience. Powered by a Ferrari’s 570 HP 4,499 cc V8 engine, the 458 Spider features a dual clutch F1 paddles-shift transmission which leads its class, whether its engine was named International Engine of the Year when launched in 2011. The car’s innovative new hard-top is 25 kg lighter than a traditional soft-top, but is also quitter and more efficient when rose: it takes only 14 seconds to open or close and occupies a small space when stored allowing the 458 Spider designers to include a rear bench for luggage behind the car’s seats.
As every Ferrari, the new 458 Spider and its coupe version the 458 Italia have a truly unique design approach and technology innovations to achieve indisputable performance and driving experience under all weather conditions.
