High intensity discharge or HID headlights have a light source that is brighter than the traditional tungsten light source. One would think that the brighter the light source of a headlight better will be the performance, but that is not true. Very bright headlights blind the drivers of oncoming cars and that is not desirable at all. And since HID lights are so much brighter than tungsten filament lights there are regulations regarding their use. In some places they are also not legal. So how come they are so bright? Well their light is from an electric arc and not from a glowing filament. If you have seen welding being done you will know how bright the light from electric arcs can be.

Therefore if you are opting for HID headlights you should take care to know first whether they are legal in your part of the world. LEDs are not expensive so having more of them does not make the headlights very expensive. They are also more durable and consume less battery power. They have already proved themselves as being the light source for LED tail lights and now it seems only a matter of time when they will start to dominate as the preferred light source for headlights as well.
