Jammu and Kashmir the northern most state of India is divided into mainly three regions – the foothill plains of Jammu, the valleys of Kashmir and the mountains of Ladakh.
Srinagar is located in the heart of Kashmir valley. The city is spread magnificently on both sides of river Jhelum. Srinagar is situated at an altitude of one thousand seven hundred and thirty meters. Srinagar is unique in many ways. It homes magnificent geographical élan, beautiful lakes, gorgeous mughal gardens, springs, golf course, hills and mountains, cycling tracks, trekking opportunities, angling, water and indoor sports, world class hotels and restaurants. As is the whole of Jammu and Kashmir state, Srinagar is also blessed with lakes that are pleasing to eyes. The prominent ones – Dal and Nagin enhance the already picturesque setting of Srinagar. Dal is considered one of the more beautiful lakes of India. It is the second largest of the state. The three sides of Dal Lake is surrounded by majestic mountains and its shores are laid by multi hued orchards and gardens. Nagin Lake is nearby Dal and in fact it is connected to Dal by a small water channel. You can even shop while in Nagin is its biggest attraction. The waters of Nagin are cool even in summer. Dal and Nagin Lakes homes a large number of houseboats moored in the islands. Houseboats let tourists stay in the peace and tranquil atmosphere of lakes. There are also many Gardens in Srinagar. Some of them were made in Mughal era. Shalimar and Nishat are two of the prominent Mughal gardens. They are situated by the sides of Dal lake. There are many prominent sites including Hazrathbal Shrine situated by the banks of Dal. This makes sightseeing in Shikara boats through Dal Lake a viable proposition.
Gulmarg is one of the premier resorts in Asia that can be visited in Kashmir tours. Its legendary beauty, prime location and proximity to Srinagar makes it more attractive. Standing at two thousand seven hundred and thirty meters Gulmarg is a prime winter destination. In winter when Gulmarg gets covered by snow, it is also the premier ski resort of India.
Ladakh is noted for its magnificent landscape which has been modified and sculpted to its present shape by wind and erosion for centuries.
