Ball point pens were created as a substitute to the fountain pens. Undoubtedly, these pens are considered to be more convenient writing instruments as compared with the fountain pens. These pens are available in the market for about 150 years. It is the oil-based ink as well as ball mechanism nib which make ball point pen easier to carry and use.

One thing should be noted that these pens are not as smooth as the fountain pens. Though, they are more convenient to use, but they provide less smoothness while writing. In order to bring smoothness while writing, rollerball pens came into the market. The ball point pens employ a ball writing mechanism in the nib which is the major difference in the rollerball pens. Rollerball pens make use of free running water-based ink which provides lots of smoothness while writing. On the other hand, various ball point pens employ thick and sticky oil-based ink.

Whenever you use a rollerball pen, you would feel like writing with the fountain pen. This is the reason why these pens provide different writing qualities ...
... which is hard to compare with any other pen. Some people believe that rollerball pens are the mixture of ball point pens as well as fountain pens, having a feel more of the fountain pen.

It is important to note that ball point pens make use of ‘twist’ or ‘push’ mechanism and you need to have to worry about the drying of the ink. On the other hand, rollerball pens have screw-on cap so that water based ink can dry the nib. However, if you go through the rollerball pens of some of the top-end designers, then you can easily get rid of this problem. If you use the pens of these brands, then certainly your ink won’t be dried even if the cap of your pen is left off accidentally.

The major advantage of rollerball pens is that they require very less pressure in order to write on a page. However, you have to apply more pressure in case of ball point pens. This is why, rollerball pens place less stress on the hands of the writer. Apart from this, the letters written with the rollerball pen appear to be bolder than the ballpoint pens.

The only disadvantage of these pens is that their ink requires very long time to dry. Thus, smudging is possible to a great extent.
