It started to sink in. What Joe had just pulled on me and called the ten-o-five was, in fact, an extremely effective blackjack past post combining simple ingenuity and pragmatic psychology. Its name teno-five was derived from the value of the chips switched in, one thousand five dollars. Had he originally bet two red chips and switched in one purple and a red, the move would have been called a "five-five," designating five hundred and five dollars.

Naturally, I had a plethora of questions, starting with "How could a dealer miss a purple chip on the layout?" Before dealing a hand, dealers cased all the bets; they were trained to do so. A purple chip represented a major bet. It was difficult to imagine that a dealer could actually overlook it. Seeing the purples in the betting square now, I'd have to say it was impossible.

Joe had the answer. "Of course a dealer could never miss a purple chip on a blackjack layout. But that makes no difference. What matters is what they see when you're claiming that you've been paid wrong. When I touched your hand, you were a bit startled. Imagine a dealer being touched like that ...
... in a live online casino by a player that he or she doesn't know.

That's a real shock. And the player yelling than he'd been paid wrong intensifies it, and then when he points to hi chips"-Joe pointed to the purples in the betting square-"and the' dealer sees the purples, he's completely gone, knocked out. Whatever image of the original bet the dealer had stored in his brain is shattered and replaced by what he sees at the moment. In effect, he completely forgets what he had seen in the betting square before dealing the cards. And these purples here" -Joe indicated the eight purple chips stacked behind- "strengthen the claim. They're called backup chips. They're there to back up your claim. They give you credibility, make the ca¬sino believe you're a legitimate high roller playing purple chips. What would a player with thousands of dollars' worth of chips on the table be doing betting $15 on a hand? That makes no sense for them. With all this going for us- a good move, a strong claim, and appropriate backup-we get paid nine Out of ten times. When we don't get paid, we follow certain procedures to get safely Out of the casino game before they mobilize to grab up our claimers. We'll get into that later. For now, let's put this blackjack move aside. I'll teach you all its mechanics when you're ready. Let's talk about craps."

For the rest of that morning we sat at the blackjack table and Joe explained his craps move and what my role in the first one that weekend would be. Like blackjack, craps could be past posted ef¬fectively. The premise was the same, but the procedure differed significantly. At craps Joe used a two-man mechanic-claimer operation. The claimer stood behind the mechanic on either end of a busy craps table. The mechanic bet $15, three red chips, on the pass line where players betting with the shooter placed their chips. If the shooter rolled a 7 or an lIon his first roll he won. If he rolled a 2, 3, or 12, he lost. Any other number rolled was called a "point" and had to be rolled a second time before a 7 in order for a pass-line bet to win. If the 7 came out first, pass-line bets lost.

If our pass-line bet lost, the mechanic simply made the same bet for the next roll after the dealer removed his losing chips. When it won, the mechanic reached down to the layout as soon as the dealer paid his bet and made the switch, taking out the three original red chips and replacing them with two purples and a red-a ten-o-five. This was done by picking up the three reds with one hand while laying down the move-chips with the other, all in a split second.
