Most people have never heard of glass reinforced plastic products yet they are all around us. An awful lot of them are used in building projects, so the chances are that you encountering these products on a day-to-day basis.

The term glass reinforced plastic or GRP is another way of saying fibreglass, which is a product most people are familiar with. They also know that fibreglass can be moulded into any shape and is extremely strong.

Common Examples of Glass Reinforced Plastic Products

Glass reinforced plastic products are often used in place of masonry. For example, an ornate doorframe could easily be made out of glass-reinforced plastic instead of masonry. Door canopies are another common form of GRP product as are the canopies used for dormer windows.

The great thing about glass-reinforced plastic is that it is strong yet light and can have any finish applied to it. It is easy to make it look just like solid wood.

GRP is now being used to produce light yet strong garage doors. They are particularly popular when given a wood like finish. ...
... They look fantastic, but do not require the extensive maintenance a real wooden garage door does.

Because GRP can be made to look like any masonry, it is also being used to make false chimneys. Even on the ground they look exactly like standard brick chimneys do up on the roof they are even more convincing. Building a chimney with complex patterns such as Corbel detail or dogtooth patterns is difficult, and is a skilled job. GRP chimneys come complete with all of this complex detail without you having to pay a skilled craftsman to build your chimney. They are light, so can be easily taken to the roof and installed.

As you can imagine, the building industry is coming up with new glass reinforced plastic products all of the time. You can even find manufacturers who are willing to make one-off custom pieces, although you have to pay quite handsomely for this kind of GRP product.

YBS composites produce and sell a wide range of glass reinforced plastic products. They stock chimneys, dormer windows, bay & porch roofs and door canopies.
