“It is estimated that 2 million to 4 million US women are assaulted by a domestic partner every year.” (Massey, J. Domestic Violence in Neurologic Practice. Archives in Neurology. 1999). Many of these cases are not reported, but the lingering effects of domestic violence are real and can be devastating. Many victims need professional help to move past the overwhelming trauma surrounding such abuse. A bruise or wound is even more painful in the light of infliction by a loved partner. A physical scar left by a domestic violence attack serves as a constant reminder of the hurt and pain of betrayed love. Betrayed love works havoc on a relationship. Bruises and wounds may heal in time, but the scars that ensue could be permanent. As traumatizing as the physical effects of domestic violence may be, however, they are short-lived compared to the psychological effects of the offense. The emotional and mental effects of domestic violence are not only devastating — they can be life-altering.

Domestic Violence — Emotional Abuse

Domestic violence has many negative repercussions. ...
... The physical damage, such as a black eye or broken nose, is clearly evident and can be treated accordingly. The emotional and psychological damage may not be as visual, but certainly are just as real. Domestic violence and emotional abuse go hand-in-hand. Emotional abuse includes such actions as verbal abuse, isolation, and intimidation. Controlling behavior also falls under this type of abuse. Emotional abuse affects the victim’s self-worth and independence. It can cause an entire personality change as feelings of helplessness, hopelessness, and despair prevail. The victim becomes despondent and fearful. If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence — emotional abuse — do not hesitate to seek help. There are qualified professionals who can help.

Domestic Violence — Mental Abuse

Domestic violence not only causes physical and emotional pain, it creates stress that may traumatize the mind. Abuse and violence are responsible for the development of a range of psychiatric problems. Mental stress is one of them. Women exposed to prolonged mental abuse may be subject to mental health problems such as depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Victims experiencing these mental health problems may have a tough struggle to overcome even though social support and safety may be in place. If you or someone you know is a victim of such domestic violence as mental abuse, seek help as soon as possible. Mental abuse, as with all matters concerning the mind, can be a complicated issue.

Victims of domestic violence as emotional abuse and domestic violence as mental abuse are often reluctant to report the abuse. Because these conditions are not physical, they may not even be aware of the reality of the abuse or the life-altering damage that may ensue if the offense is not dealt with effectively. If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence — physical, emotional, or mental — seek professional help. The sooner you reach out for help, the faster healing can take place.
