Are Multinational Corporations In Ireland Concerned By Our Economic Situation?
One of the big considerations to ponder from our economic position at the moment is the effect that this may have on multinational corporations in Ireland. The question must arise whether multinationals in Ireland are consumed by the general sense of negativity that pervades many sectors of Irish industry at present.
The evidence would appear to suggest that the answer is no. First of all, we must consider that multinational corporations in Ireland are the backbone of our export effort. And with new figures revealing that we have now beaten the former record for exports, going back to 2008, it seems fair to suggest that multinationals in
Ireland are pretty happy with their lot right now.A specific cause of potential concern for multinationals in Ireland is our corporation tax rate, but the multinational community in Ireland seems to accept the government’s very vigorous commitment to maintaining this – despite pressure to the country from some of our
European neighbours. It’s also important to remember that many of the considerations that ...
... attracted multinationals to Ireland in the first place still remain in place, not least of which is access to a highly educated and tech-savvy employee pool. Add in the fact that we’re English-speaking, and the attraction to US multinationals, in particular, becomes even more evident.
Multinationals in Ireland also continue to enjoy our strategic geographical positioning which makes us an ideal gateway to Europe – and a ‘halfway house’ between the U.S. and Europe. And quite apart from these highly tangible factors, some more intangible elements come into play when multinationals in Irelandmultinational corporations in Ireland either decide to set up here in the first place – or to expand their operations or perhaps recommend us to fellow industrialists.
One such factor that surfaces time and time again is the perception of Ireland among the multinational community as a very friendly place to do business – and to relocate to. It’s worth remembering that they don’t just work in Ireland – they live here too.
So our traditional traits of being welcoming, charming and good conversationalists pays a real dividend when it comes to wooing multinationals to Ireland. It’s impossible to put a value on it, but Ireland still remains as one of the strongest national brands on the international front in terms of easy recognition and a positive, friendly image.
What other country, for example, can gain access to the White House to celebrate its national holiday? Year after year, multinationals considering Ireland see our political masters rubbing shoulders with the US president of the day. And while it can be easily dismissed as ‘showbiz’, the reality is very different.
It is a clever ‘playing’ of one of our trump cards in attracting multinationals to Ireland – our sense of being a great place – if not a great economy at the moment.
It’s little wonder that multinationals have a very clear image in their head that Ireland is a place to be considered when looking to establish a gateway to Europe and other markets.
