The Basics Of Myers And Brigs Personality

The Myers and Brigs personality is a concept of determining personality types that was developed by Isabel Brigs Myers in the 1940s. It was based on the Jung’s model of personality types. What Myers and Brigs sought to do was to extend the Jung’s model and represent in language that could be understood by common folks. This led to the development of the now commonly used tool to determine Myers and Brigs personality type called the Myers and Brigs Type Indicator (MBTI).
Myers and Brigs personality types
Generally, there are 16 different Myers and Brigs personality types that are defined by or based on four different dichotomies described by Myers and Brigs. These four dichotomies sometimes referred to as pairs of preference are;
• Extraversion (E)/Introversion (I)
• Thinking (T)/ Feeling (F)
• Sensing (S)/Intuition (N)
• Judging (J)/Perceiving (P)
The exact description of each dichotomy of Myers and Brigs personality types is not really describable by everyday layman terms. However, it can be interpreted on a general level as follows;
Extraversion and Introversion: ...
... These dichotomy pair is usually perceived as attitudes. They represent the way in which one prefers to expend their energy; i.e. in either Introversion (inner world; ideas, beliefs and information) or in Extraversion (outer world; people, situations and things).
Feeling and Thinking: these are functions that represent the way in which one prefers to make decisions. Some personality types prefer to make decision based on objective logic (Thinking) while others prefer to make decision using personal values and beliefs (Feeling).
Sensing and Intuition: These are functions that represent how one processes information. People with a preference for sensing prefer to be given facts while those with a preference for Intuition deal with ideas to generate new possibilities.
Perceiving and Judging: This is the last pair of preference which represents lifestyle functions used to relate with other people. Some people prefer a flexible life where they go with the flow and respond to needs as they arise (Perception) while other prefer to be stable and organized (Judging).
Every Myers and Brigs personality type is represented one dominant function which is followed and a supporting auxilary function. The functions in turn support the attitude of the specific personality type in an introverted or extroverted manner. Based on these pairs of preference, the following Myers and Brigs personality types can be characterized;
• ISTJ: Introverted sensing with thinking
