Most Effective Ways To Design Reading Lists

So you are working away at your homeschool transcript and making comprehensive records. It is all going nicely and the next item on your to do checklist is a reading list. You realize that including a reading list is a great plan. A widely asked question at this point is what to include on that reading list. The reading list features everything - all the books you read throughout high school, every single book you read for enjoyment, plus every book you read for school. You can also include things like magazine subscriptions!

There are quite a few people who really don't read very much or have difficulty with reading. You can always fluff it up by including audio books. Yet another approach any time you don't have enough books that you have read personally would be to include books that you read out loud.

If you happen to be a prolific reader, then the chances of you recording a 100% of the books that you read is very slim. If you can record 50% of the book that you read, you are going to be fine. I had two prolific readers, it was about the only thing they had in common. I was not able to keep up with the books ...
... they read. They refused to maintain a reading list as much as I cajoled them. Approximately every two months I asked them to get the books they have been reading and I pile them on the floor and I typed them in.

You simply cannot hit all of the classics. When you think about it, a typical high school AP English course might read and discuss two classic books a quarter. Your kids are very likely reading more than that therefore I do not know that I would worry too much.

If you have a couple of classics per year then that is probably good; colleges care more that they have a balance of classics and more popular literature. If you are applying for a great books program or a great books college then they might care more about seeing some great books. From time to time they do not like for you to have read the book because it ruins it for the teachers.
