An Explosion Of Flavours

The teardrop in the Indian Ocean is how Sri Lanka is referred to, but though small in size this paradise island nation packs a punch in the diverse attractions it has to offer a visitor. Its allure is in the simplicity of its people and habits, which at the same time manage to offer far from simple experiences that last a lifetime. Being in the exotic east one of the main attractions of Sri Lanka is obviously its flavoursome food and with a visit to this popular holiday destination you can embark upon a culinary tour. In Sri Lanka it is all about blending the different flavours, to create a single explosion of flavour in a dish.
This is all owing to the spices, the aromatic spices that are part and parcel of every Sri Lankan dish. A unique feature of the cooking here is that each curry is an individual creation as there are no hard and fast recipes to follow. There are the basic rules, but after that it is at the discretion of the cook to add the spices as he or she wishes. Which is why you can sample chicken curry after chicken curry and not get fed up as each taste is unique. Another factor which adds to the appeal ...
... of Sri Lankan food is the freshness of the products used. Very rarely will you find processed foods used in authentic Sri Lankan cuisine, ensuring that they are both tasty and wholesome.
Do not let the term ‘spicy’ scare you into thinking that the food will be unpalatably hot and that you will have tears streaming down your cheeks with each mouthful. Spicy here simply means full of mouth watering flavour which tingle your taste buds with each taste. You can try Sri Lankan firm favourites such as hoppers, a pan dish which has a thin wafer like outer with a soft centre. Sometimes an egg is added to the centre and such hoppers are, not surprisingly, referred to as ‘egg hoppers’. Served warm it is amazing paired with a curry, butter or a sambol. If you are having it for breakfast you could even have a plain hopper with jam! It is completely up to you. Milk rice is another popular dish, usually made to celebrate an event, such as the dawning of the New Year, a birthday, starting of school, a new job, basically any special event is celebrated by partaking of milk rice or ‘kiribath’. Do not worry though, milk rice is not only made for special occasions and you can enjoy this rice cooked with rich, creamy coconut milk anytime you like, though it is mostly a breakfast dish.
Culinary tours in Sri Lanka will enable you to enjoy unique food experiences full of flavours that are hard to imagine but amazing to taste. So embark on culinary tours in Sri Lanka with Ceylon Leisures, tours that will take you to hoppers, milk rice and beyond!
