I never really liked school. When I was a child, I spent more time away from school than I did in school. And I know many other students were the same. If we are honest with ourselves, many of us did not enjoy listening to the teacher, having them chalk lessons on a board, or give us homework when we wanted to go out and play. Most of us will admit that we've forgotten a lot of the things we learned at school.
But if you look back over your life you'll discover that you learned many important things through adversity and challenge. Benjamin Franklin once said, ‘Those things that hurt instruct.' And boy, was he right! For example, marriages start because of love, but continue because of commitment. Businesses start because of opportunity, but they continue to succeed because of drive, vision and the birth of new ideas and concepts. Each one of those things has its own challenges.
Challenge
Here is what I suggest we do when life presents us with challenges, especially in the area of relationships.
First, attack the problem, not the people. Remember, we are all on the same team. Don't take your ...
... frustration out on people. Second, make sure you get all the information you need. I often speak to business consultants who tell me that before you determine solutions you must have all the facts. This applies to life, to business, and to relationships. Get all the facts and think before you speak. Nothing is more dangerous than second-guessing or jumping to conclusions. Third, list all your options. When you list your options you will probably be less emotional and more objective. Be clear in your own mind about the outcome you want.
Fourth, remember to look for the positive in all situations. When you are facing challenges in life - whether personal or business - it is easy to only see the negatives. But M. Scott Peck says, 'It is only because of problems that we grow mentally and spiritually'. It is through the pain of confronting and resolving challenges that we learn. No matter how bad things are, my friends, or how bad things may seem at the time, every situation holds a positive, so look for it. Every photograph that you have is a negative in reverse. Learn to see life in reverse when you are looking at a negative.
Lastly, once you've recognised the positives, never hold back from doing good. In spite of the challenge you face, whether in business, marriage or other relationships, don't hold back from doing good because you will be sowing a seed for the future.
