Pat Mesiti: Always Make Time For The Little Guy

People enter our lives every day. Just think of the person that takes your money at the toll booth. If it's a hot summer's day they may be sweating in that booth. Wouldn't it be nice to notice them, smile at them and wish them a great day? One of my dear friends does this all the time. She brings joy to the toll booth attendants because she always has a pleasant smile, a happy tone, and she notices the little guy.
The other week I was at a dinner appointment and I was talking with one of my friends. His son came up to me and said hello. The boy was wearing a bright red jacket and a bright red cap and he looked like he was dressed for success. The sad thing was I shook his hand but I continued speaking to his father. One of my friends challenged me about ignoring the kid and I realised what I'd done was not right. So I went back, made a fuss over his cap and jacket, gave him eye contact, and all night made sure that kid got the attention he needed.
Charles Plumb tells an interesting story. He was a navy pilot in Vietnam. After 75 missions his plane was destroyed and he parachuted into enemy territory. He survived ...
... six years in a Communist prison and now he lectures on his experiences. One day a stranger came up to him and said, ‘Your name is Plumb. You flew fighter jets from the aircraft carrier Kittyhawk, and you got shot down.' Plumb asked how the man knew those things about him. Smiling, the stranger said, ‘I packed your parachute, I guess it worked.'
That night Plumb could not sleep. He said he kept wondering what the man had looked like in uniform, and how many times he, as a fighter pilot, had walked past the man, a plain sailor, without speaking. Plumb thought about the hours the man spent in the bows of the ship carrying and weaving the shrouds and folding the silks of each chute—holding in his hands the fate of someone he didn't even know.
Challenge
Friends, make sure that you notice people. Go out of your way to pay attention to people: people who do things for you, people who give you introductions, people who shake your hand, people who greet you. Go out of your way to notice them, and don't make the mistake of not enjoying the experience of others.
So often we look for the famous, the rich and the well-to-do, because we want to hang around them. But always remember that every big shot was once a little shot. Notice people when they are small and seemingly insignificant and they will remember you when they become important, significant and wealthy.
