Medical Benefits Of Using An Adjustable Bed

Medical Benefits of Using an Adjustable Bed
Earlier adjustable beds were used only by the hospitals, but now they are widely used in private homes too, as they provide great comfort. An adjustable bed is also called a semi-Fowler bed, as it places the person in a semi-Fowler position.
In what way are these adjustable beds useful?
Although there is no proof that these beds provide a magical cure, they have proved to certainly help with certain health issues. People with medical conditions that need them to sleep in a particular position usually use adjustable beds. These beds may also be used by people who are temporarily or permanently bed-ridden, to enable them to sleep peacefully.
Adjustable beds are like hospital beds and allow elevation of legs or the upper body.
They ease edema of the legs, soreness of the body and ease neck tension. They offset heartburn and nighttime reflux. They provide extreme relief to certain parts of the body, such as the shoulders, neck, and spine.
Patients with conditions such as hypertension, decubitus ulcers, congestive heart failure, circulation ...
... problems, asthma, varicose veins, phlebitis and several other problems, often find it difficult to lay flat and these beds provided the much needed up tilt. The same effect may be achieved by adjusting a few pillows but it is certainly far easier to get the job done with the push of a button.
They are especially good for individuals with back problems, as the upper body is positioned higher than the lower body with support under the knees to bend the knees at an angle. This helps take away some stress off the lower back. Sleeping in this position also supports the curves of the spine and relieves pressure from the entire body.
The potential benefit of an adjustable bed is that it helps anyone who feels comfortable in an inclined position, such as sitting in a recliner with the feet up, rather than lying on a flat mattress. There are certain back conditions, like degenerative spondylolisthesis, spinal stenosis, and osteoarthritis that are helped with sleeping in an adjustable bed.
For people who suffer from degenerative spondylolisthesis, they gain relief from low back pain with support under the knees while sleeping in a reclining position. They can sleep peacefully through the night. People suffering from osteoarthritis or facet joint arthritis, usually feel sore and stiff on waking up in the mornings and an adjustable bed provides better support and ensures there is not much joint compression. People with spinal stenosis feel more comfortable when standing rather than being straight and at times sleeping in a reclining position may make them feel better rather than sleeping straight.
An adjustable bed is a boon to people who suffer from different ailments and for people who have undergone surgery. They allow the patient to easily get off and on the bed, thus also ensuring that the heart muscle is not strained and allows easier breathing.
Mattresses used for adjustable beds are also important, especially for those that suffer from back pain. Depending on the need, one can either get a firm or a soft mattress to support. Some adjustable beds also have motors for massaging.
Adjustable beds are useful for use in a variety of health problems, be it in the hospital or home. Following a physician's instructions has never been easier.
