A fiber optic receiver comes in three different types - positive-intrinsic-negative (PIN) photo diodes, positive-negative (PN) junctions, and avalanche photo diodes (APDs).

Buying one of them is costly. Therefore, make sure that the receiver you spend money on can perfectly regenerate and decode the encoded data stream over the entire range of power levels. Equally important is the ability to take the encoded/decoded signals and transfer them over the entire network bandwidth. This allows for less signal degradation across the network.
