Stress Management – Prevent, Cope And Reduce Stress
Stress is what you feel when you have to handle more than what you can. This usually happens when you expect too much from yourself or try to live up to the high expectations that others have from you.
Stress can be physical as well as emotional. Either one may trigger the other. Physical stress arises when your body responds to physical stressor like work, illness, exercise etc. Emotional stress arises when you face challenging situations. Stress level may vary depending upon the nature of the challenge that an individual is facing.
Stress affects your body in various ways. Some of the effects of physical and mental stress are as follows:
• Makes your heartbeat faster.
• Makes you sweat more.
• Reduces your concentration level.
• Changes your appetite and eating habits.
• Causes you to make bad decisions.
• Makes you feel depressed, anxious, helpless, restless, angry and frustrated.
• Makes you neglect important things like school, work and also decreases productivity.
These symptoms of stress emphasize why stress management is so important. Stress ...
... management will help you prevent, cope and reduce the tension that occurs in stressful situations.
Some of the ways by which you can prevent and cope with stress are as follows:
Know your limits and learn to say “no”: None of us are supernatural, we all have limits. Know your limits and always stick to them. Don’t put extra pressure on yourself. It’s better to say ‘no’ than push yourself to the extreme.
Exercise and practice yoga: Exercising helps to prevent and relieve the effects of stress and tension. Practicing yoga is another effective stress buster. Yoga helps you to forget your daily troubles and promotes relaxation. It has positive effects on you physically, mentally and spiritually.
Eat Well: We often tend to skip meals when we are stressed out. A healthy diet will help you to cope with the stress by giving the body what it needs. A well fed body is better prepared to face and cope with stress.
Manage your budget: Financial crisis is the most common reason for stress. Plan your budget and try to manage it in such a way that you don’t come across money worries.
Learn to forgive and forget: We live in a world where no one is perfect, everybody makes mistakes. The feeling of bitterness and revenge towards someone adds up to the stress level of an individual. Free yourself from all the negative energy by learning to forgive and get rid of the anger.
Open up to your loved ones: Share your feelings and spend time with someone you love and trust. The person might not be able to do anything to alter your stressful situation, but speaking your heart out and discussing the probable solution will surely make you feel a lot better.
Find time for your hobbies: Find time to do something you like. You could listen to some music, watch a movie, go for a walk, spend time with your family, play with your pet or do something that relaxes you.
Start practicing stress management before it’s too late. Too much stress may lead to some serious health problems. Your determination to fight stress and willingness to make the necessary changes will lead you towards a healthy and happier life.
