Ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber, more commonly known as EPDM has many uses. However, its most common use is as a flat roofing material.

The mix of this synthetic rubber varies, but the higher the ethylene content the better the material is considered to be. Higher levels of ethylene make the material more pliable yet stronger. Levels vary, but are usually between 45% and 75%.

The History of EPDM for Roofing
EPDM had been around for a while, but was not used for roofing until the American firm Carlisle Syntec began producing it in continuous rolls in the 1960s. This fantastic roofing material was produced in sheets that allowed a 9 meter square area to be covered without any joints.

It was so good that public buildings in America were having this roofing material specified as part of their plans. It was used on the Equitable Building, Chicago and Manhattan Towers, New York and on many of the car plants that were going up in the 60s. It was ideal for these buildings with their expansive flat roofs.

... we can see just how great a roofing material high grade EPDM really is. Most of the buildings it was used on have their original EPDM roofs still on. Those buildings are still watertight, a feat that most hot roofing and felt roofing installations cannot emulate.

Is EPDM For You?
If you have a flat roof to either cover or repair you should get several quotes and including a couple of EPDM quotes.
Generally speaking, an EPDM roof will cost more. However, when you factor in how long it will last most people realise that this kind of roofing represents good value for money. If your budget allows it, this is usually the right kind of roof for you.

With any flat roof the longevity of the roof is affected by how well it is laid as well as the materials used. This means that you should only use a contractor who is qualified and experienced in installing EPDM.
