“Jog Falls – The highest waterfall in India”
Jog Falls is a very popular water fall located on the borders of Shimoga and North Kanara. It is in the State of Karnataka; India. It is a large waterfall 30 kilometres from the source and is created by the Sharavathi River falling from a height of 253 meters. It creates four magnificent cascades, Raja Rani, Rocket and Roarer. Jog falls is also known as Gerusoppaa falls. It is considered to be the highest plunge of an Indian waterfall. It attracts a large number of tourists because of its beauty and powerful cascades as well as for its idyllic location amongst the evergreen forest of Karnataka. Steps are cut into the rocks to take visitors to the very heart of the waterfall.
During Monsoons the Jog flows torrentially and makes for a wondrous sight. Spectacular rainbows are also seen and make for an even more appealing sight. One can also take a walk at the bottom of the gorge when the sluice gates of the Linganmakki dam are closed. Tourists can also avail of river rafting twenty kilometers away from the fallsat Honnemaradu. Near the waterfall is the Linganmakki Dam ...
... across river Sharavathi, and the hydro-electric power station that it serves. The power station has been operational since 1949, and is one of the largest hydro-electric stations in India and a significant source of electric power for Karnataka.
The best time to visit Jog Falls is in winter because during that time the sky is clear, enabling a better view. From august to December the flow of water is the highest. Jog Falls can be reached by both road and rail. Thalaguppa in Shimoga is the nearest railway station and Mangalore International Airport is the nearest airport.
