Dwarka is located in the Jamnagar district of Gujarat, India. This holy sit in Gujarat is believed to have been the dwelling place of the Hindu God Krishna and thus is a a very popular place for pilgrimage. Legend has it that city has been submerged by the sea six times and that the present city is in its seventh incarnation. Dwarka is one of the seven most holy places for the Hindus of India, where Varanasi tops the list. The city derives its name from “dwar” which means door in Sanskrit and Hindi. Along with being one of the holiest places in India it is also part of the Char Dham along with Badrinath, Puri and Rameshwaran.
There are many temples located in Dwarka. The Dwarakadhish is an important temple for the Hindus. The present temple was built in 16th century, while according to legend the original temple was believed to have been built by Krishna's great grandson, King Vajra. ... pilgrims enter, and Moksha Dwar, through which pilgrims exit the temple. There is a magnificent view of the confluence of the Gomti River flowing toward the sea from atop the temple. Dwarka also has shrines dedicated to other Hindu Gods as Vasudeva, Balram and Devaki. A special temple for Rukmini Devi is on the way to Bet Dwarka temple, which can be reached by boat. A deity of Lord Dwarakanath is also kept in Bet Dwaraka. Bet Dwarka alos houses many Shrines dedicated to Goddesses Lakshmi Narayana, Trivikrama, Jambavati Devi, Satyabhama Devi and Rukmini Devi.
Dwarka also host a number of Darshans and Sevas. The darshans are colorful and festive and worth seeing. Some of the darshans are Mangala, shringar and Bhog. Dwarka is also rich in history and have a number of mythological legends associated with it. The temples and ancient buildings are situated amidst beautiful gardens of flowers.
Dwarka can be visited any time of the year but it comes alive in the months of August and September when the town celebrates Krishna’s birthday. Dwarka is well connected by roads, rails and airports.
