Dharmasthala is temple village on the banks of the river Nethravati in Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka State, India. It is also set in the midst of the beautiful forests and hills of Karnataka. Dharmasthala is famed for the temple of Sri Manjuanathaswamy. The temple is devoted to the Hindu God Shiva and the main object of worship is the Shiva Lingam. The lingam made of gold attracts devotees and tourists alike. This unusual temple is run by a Jain trust and the pujas are conducted by a Hindu priest. Lakshadeepa, a festival of lights is the main festival here and is celebrated in November or December. On an average ten thousand pilgrims visit every day, free food is provided to all the pilgrims and guest houses are available for stays. Hostels with free food and lodging are also available.
The temple is known for its charity. It offers free food, education, health care and conducts free mass weddings. The free food or “anna dana” is provide to all those who visit the temple. It is offered everyday to all irrespective of religion, creed or cast. The “Vidya dana” scheme ...
... is for free education which is provided to over two hundred and fifty students. The courses offered here include engineering, medical, dental sciences, various languages and yoga. The main focus of the education here is Indian culture and values. The “Aushada dana” which provides free health care to locals is another scheme. Health care includes modern eye hospital, cleft lip surgery, oral implants, a mobile hospital and an ayurvedic hospital based on the four elements of air, water, fire and earth. Free mass weddings have also gained popularity in the form of “Abhaya dana”. Couples from all religions, castes and creeds can get their wedding expenses paid which includes mangalsutra, wedding attire and food for a limited number of guests. The wedding is conducted in accordance with the couple’s religion.
There are two museums in Dharmasthala. One houses important relics and manuscripts and the other vintage cars. There are a number of other temples that can be visited. People can also enjoy the beauty of the hills.
