Lakshadweep is a cluster of islands in the Laccadive Sea, located 200 to 440 km across Kerala. It was formerly known as the Laccadive Islands, although geographically this is the only name of the pivotal subdivision of the group. The islands form the smallest Union Territory of India. The land is 32 square kilometers and the lagoon area is about 4,200 square kilometers. Its global location is at 71 and 74 degree East Longitude and 80 degrees and 12 degree 30 minutes North Lattitude.
Lakshadweep, an archipelago consisting of twelve isles, three ranges and five submerged banks, with a count of about thirty-nine islands adding to its serenity. The name Lakshadeep has originated from the Sanskrit word ‘’Lakshadweepa’’ which means a hundred thousand islands in the regional language. To explain, ‘laksha’ means a lakh and ‘Dweepa’ denotes an island in colloquial language. Historians have a belief that that the last king of Kerala, Cheraman Perumal built his kingdom in Lakshadeep after he reached there, following a shipwreck. Thirdly, Karavatti and mainly known for its mosques. It holds a belief that the water is sacred and is a cure for many diseases. The small town is steady and colorful with continuous tourist inflow. Other attractions of the place include the enchanting lake and the large aquarium with tropical fish and corals. Bangaram, Agatti, Kalpeni and Kadhamath are the other places which are known for water sports and nature’s beauty. Lakshadeep tourism is well organized and they believe and follow their motto which is ‘’ admire beauty, not exploit’’. Water sports are being developed day by day in order to catch attention of the tourists. The island is idealistic between the months October and April.
