Lakshadweep is a cluster of islands in the Laccadive Sea, located 200 to 440 km across Kerala. Lakshadweep, an archipelago consisting of twelve isles, three ranges and five submerged banks, with a count of about thirty-nine islands adding to its serenity. The name Lakshadeep has originated from the Sanskrit word ‘’Lakshadweepa’’ which means a hundred thousand islands in the regional language. To explain, ‘laksha’ means a lakh and ‘Dweepa’ denotes an island in colloquial language. Historians have a belief that that the last king of Kerala, Cheraman Perumal built his kingdom in Lakshadeep after he reached there, following a shipwreck. Another saying goes that a Muslim saint of the seventh century ...
... managed to reach the islands, after the ship which he was travelling in was caught in a dangerous storm. Later the British conquered the islands defeating Tipu Sultan. It is known for its marine beauty which captures one’s eye forever.
