Auli – The Ultimate Skiing Destination In India

“Auli – The Ultimate Skiing destination in India”
Auli is a hill station in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India. Auli is one of the lesser known hill stations but has gained popularity of late as a skiing destination in India after Uttarakhand was established as a State in 2000. It is located in the Garwhal Himalayan ranges. Auli stands for the word “Bugyal” which means meadow in the regional language. Legend has it that Guru Shankarachrya visited Auli in during 8th century Ad and built a math at Joshimath, which is still there today and is known as Shankaracharya Tapastali. In the past Auli was a thriving trade center and was frequented by the Bhotia tribe to trade with Tibet for centuries.
Auli today is known for its skiing slopes and winter sports. It has been a venue for Skiing festivals since 1986. Under the aegis of the Winter Games Federation of India, Auli hosts National championships in the months of February and March. Skiing events of the first South Asian Winter Games were held in Auli in January 2011. The skiing center was set up in Auli in 1984. The Uttar Pradesh State Government has ...
... a branch called Garhwal Mandal Corporation which runs the center. Skiing is taught by professional trainers. The Indian Army discovered the spot when they were posted on the Tibetan border. The army has its own skiing center here.
The Auli ski slopes stretch out for ten to twenty kilometers of snow. Auli is ranked as the top most skiing slope in Asia. Both sides of the slope are covered with oak and coniferous trees, the trees break the speed of the wind and make it ideal for skiing. Adventure seeking tourists get to ski and beginners can also get lessons. Professional skiers can also enroll in advanced courses. One can also opt for treks along the beautiful trails of snow. Tourists looking for a relaxing vacation can go for ski lifts which operate from November to March. There is also an option for cable cars from November to April for the cost of 2000INR.
