Alibaug is a coastal town in the Konkan region of Maharashtra, India. It is located three hundred kilometers south of Mumbai and in the past was the place of Bene Israeli Jews. Alibaug is a three hundred years old sea side town and today it has become a popular beach resort for the rich and famous tourists. Sarkhel Kanhoji Aangre the naval chief of King Shivaji's Kingdom developed Alibaug in the 17th Caentury. Bene Israelite Ali was a rich man in the city who stayed on Ali's gardens and therefore it was named was named as "Alibagh". Aside from the beaches Alibaug is also known for its rich history. Tourism also happens to be Alibaug’s main source of income.
Tourists come to Alibaug to enjoy the beaches and frolic in the sea. The beaches in Alibaug are very popular. Alibaug beach is the main beach in the town. History and architecture lovers can also visit the Alibaug sea fort built by Shivaji, Tower of St. Barbara, ancient churches, synagogues and other forts. The Kaneshwar temple situated about seventeen kilometer away from Alibaug to Karlekhind - Chondi road thirteen kilometer from Alibaug in Northeast direction is a very famous Shiv temple. The temple can be reached by climbing well paved stairs to reach the nine hundred foot destination. Landmarks along the route are tombs of MohanGiri and Balgiri, Nagoba Rest, Jambhali Plateau, God's stair and Gaymandi. The special attraction is an ancient sweet water tank enclosed in traditional structure of black stone. The ancient temple was built by Raja Ramdeorai yadav. The premises also include Nagaar-khana, Bheem Kunda, a garden for flowers as an offering to the temple Gods. There is a fair on Kartik Poornima every year.
A variety of rare flowers and herbs are also found on the hill.Tourists can also enjoy local cuisine of vegetables, fish and rice. Alibaug is also a home to a many Bollywood celebrities including Shah Rukh Khan, Yana Gupta and Juhi Chawla.
