A HOP IN THE LAND OF CLOUDS
Meghalaya is a state in the north-east of India. It is derived from a Sanskrit word, meaning ‘’ abode of clouds’’. The state is bounded by Assam on the north and Bangladesh on the south. Their native language is khasi and gharo with some knowledge of English too. The capital of the state is Shillong. About one- third of the area is forested and it is a very hilly region with uneven surfaces. The state is basically agro based, as crops such as pineapple, banana, maize and potatoes. There is a dark side towards the state as well as there are instances of illegal mining activities.
There are a number of tourist attractions in this state. The capital can boast about the artificial Ward’s lake, as the sand and the lighting make it look spectacular. Shilling cathedral is a famous church, occupying less space, built during the Britishers era. The tough Khasi hills occupy the central part of the state. Khasi Hills a serene destination, attracts many tourists, within India and abroad. The Elephant Falls is another ravishing tourist location. The mountain stream torrent over two successive falls which is set amidst fern covered rocks forming a beautiful view. There is also a unique cave destination called Krem Mawmluh, which resembles a ‘SHIVALINGA’.
Meghalaya tourism has taken a drastic new dimension over the recent past, with the entry of foreign tourists in India. Until recently, it was a land of rocks, but it is changing a trend which has helped it to evolve over the years. The beauty of the state lies in its beautiful lakes and enchanting valleys.
There is easy accessibility to different cities across our country. The National Highways 40 and 44 seem to be life-lines to the state as there is great connectivity owing to these. Roadways and railways are being developed and trying to be matched with good standards. Lady Hydari Park, Shillong Peak, Ward’s lake and golf links and other places fetches remarkable revenue to the state.
