Diagnostic Tools And Surgical Procedures For Vascular Disease
It is a common misconception that vascular disease is nothing but a heart condition. Actually, this disease is characterized by hardening of the arteries which usually is a result of a fat or plaque clogged artery lining, an attribute which is typical but not exclusive in heart problems. Other than the heart, it also affects the arteries of the brain (cerebrovascular) and legs (peripheral vascular disease).
When the blood vessels that carry blood, oxygen and nutrients to the body harden it will result to insufficient blood supply followed by reduced function, tissue damage, and in unlikely events, it can lead to death. The symptoms of this disease vary depending on the affected body part.
It is also important to know the risk factors for this condition. This can help one determine if he is prone to be affected or inflicted with this disease. The exact cause for the various types of vascular disease are not yet determined, however some conditions increase the possibility of acquiring it. Smoking, obesity, unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, high blood and high cholesterol levels, and stress are just some of ...
... the health circumstances that can aggravate the hardening and clogging of the arteries.
So how can vascular disease be detected?
Like in determining most medical conditions, history and physical examinations are the primary ways to identify the presence of the disease. These examinations are usually followed by other diagnostic tests that can provide more details such as the harshness of the condition and possible treatments available to overcome it.
Most people do not know that one way to detect vascular disease is through the inspection of the formation of vascular structures in the skin. Although this diagnostic test is non-obtrusive, it is still regarded to be accurate and defined procedure. It does not only help the doctor detect the condition but also aid him in preparing and customizing a plan of treatment and care for each individual and condition.
Additionally, there are also diagnostic means such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computerized tomography (CT) scans and areteriograms. MRI is a digital imaging technique that provides a look at the detailed internal structures. On the other hand, CT scans are more likely to be used for cardiac problems for it allows a great view of the coronary arteries. Moreover, arteriograms, or more commonly know as angiogram or angiography provides a look at the inside the lumen, blood vessels and organs, particularly the arteries, veins, and heart chambers.
After knowing the diagnostic tools for vascular disease, it is also important to know the surgical procedures for the condition. People diagnosed with it can choose to undergo carotid artery procedures, abdominal aortic aneurysm restoration, artery bypasses, hemodialysis, thrombolysis, and lower extremity angioplasty and stents to name a few.
“Prevention is better than cure.” For those who do not want to be diagnosed with vascular disease and undergo the surgical procedures to treat it, there are some ways to prevent it, and on top would be to avoid the risk factors.
